The Marais

The rue Dupuis Apartment is hidden away in a secret corner of the Marais, a neighborhood described in the Time Out Guide to Paris as

"a magical area whose narrow streets are dotted with hôtels particuliers, art galleries, fashion boutiques and stylish cafes … a lively, warm international quartier … which to many people represents Paris at best."

We find the Marais beautiful and fascinating; we never tire of wandering its narrow streets and discovering new shops, ancient monuments, handsome buildings and trendy places to eat and drink - or just while away an hour or two on a lazy afternoon.

After all, where else can we get to watch bearded, black-suited Hassidic Jews mingling with hand-holding gay body-builders, or see gaunt fashion models flouncing dramatically down a street crowded with pudgy Russian tourists.

Walking the streets is at least half the fun of being in Paris. (The French even have a word for it: flâner means wandering pleasantly around the city with nothing more serious in mind that smiling at the pretty girls and enjoying the ambiance.) The best place to flâner in Paris is the Marais, and you can begin your life as a flâneur right outside your door on the rue Dupuis.

A short block away from the apartment is one of Paris' loveliest small parks: le Square du Temple, a beautifully maintained urban space that features a constantly changing panorama of flowering plants and bushes. Our little park also has a bandstand (delightful summer concerts); benches for weary Parisians and visitors (heavenly after a day of shopping and museums) and even a tiny lake with a waterfall - right in the middle of Paris!
